Frequently Asked Questions

  • What height should I mow my lawn to?

You should maintain your Sir Walter, Palmetto or Sapphire buffalo lawn to a 35mm height (usually the 3rd or 4th notch from the bottom). If your property is in plenty of shade, raise the height to 50 and 75mm (5th or 6th notch on your mower) and mow less frequently. Kikuyu can be cut to 25 and 50mm.

  • How much topsoil/underlay should we put down?

50 to 100mm of underlay is ideal. Use a suitable quality underlay to suit your environment. If you’re on poor sandy soil, use compost over a sandy loam. This will keep moisture where it’s needed most (at the roots) and save all of your watering efforts from draining away!

  • Do I need to top dress the newly laid lawn?

No, if you do your preparation correctly and lay your rolls properly, there is no need to top dress. Top dressing is only needed to improve the soil's nutrients or even out your levels. When top dressing, ensure you can still see the leaves of the grass. Don’t pile it on to fill the low sections; you will suffocate it! If any deep parts need to be raised, do it gradually. Stockpile some soil and add to it as the growth allows over time. If the top dressing you use has fertilisers (which is often the case), don’t use additional products as it not necessary and can do more damage than good. Work the soil down into the leaves and water it well.
