Planning on Doing Turf Installation Yourself?

If you prefer the DIY approach when it comes to turf installation, we recommend following these steps:


  • Spray the Area: It's advisable to use a non-selective herbicide like “Zero” following the directions on the packaging then leave it 10 to 14 days. If after three or four days you don’t see any significant degeneration in the area you have sprayed, you may need to spray a second time. Some weeds are quite resilient and therefore harder to eradicate!
  • Tackle Weeds: Once the weeds and pre-existing grass are dead, remove an inch to an inch and a half of soil with the waste material to remove any seed bank present in the topsoil. This will prevent seeds from germinating and popping up in your new lawn. If you have a heavy infestation of weeds, the use of a pre-emergent herbicide can be beneficial.
  • Implement Compost: It is recommended that a good quality organic compost is used at a minimum depth of 50mm to 150mm depending on the level you’re working with or trying to achieve in relation to existing paths and driveways. When choosing your underlay, speak with our team for advice on which of our soil blends is best for your site.
  • Lay Fertiliser: Broadcast our turf launcher fertiliser to encourage root establishment (a $20 tub will cover 200m2).
  • Roll the Turf: We recommend using a brick-style pattern to stagger the joins. If you have a turf roller available, this helps to ensure good contact between the soil & the turf (but not essential)
  • Water the Turf: Be sure to water thoroughly to encourage healthy growth.
